From Battlefields to Bourbon Street:
Music of the French Alliance during the American Revolution
Programmed in honor of the 250th anniversary of America’s Founding, Music from New France explores the lost music found in New France (Louisiana Territory), once owned by America’s greatest ally during the Revolution, the Kingdom of France. This program will highlight sacred texts set to secular tunes by Jean-Baptiste Lully, Andre Campra, and more, that were compiled into a 1754 manuscript found in New Orleans and sung by Ursuline Nuns.
We hope you join us for a delightful trip through musical history as we present sacred motets, secular songs, dance music, and so much more as we celebrate the French Alliance.
Pre-concert talk begins at approximately 6:45 both nights. Translations of sung texts available.

Bach: Magnificat & Coleman: Nunc Dimittis
Clarion Choir
Clarion Orchestra
Steven Fox, conductor
The Clarion Choir & The Clarion Orchestra premiere a new sacred work by young American composer Alistair Coleman alongside J.S. Bach’s Magnificat. Coleman is a doctoral fellow at Princeton University and serves on the composition faculty of the Curtis School of Music in Philadelphia. Knowing that the second half of the concert would be Bach’s beloved Magnificat, Coleman cleverly devised a work that sets to music another significant part of the traditional Evensong service that is sung alongside the Magnificat. He honed in specifically on the Nunc Dimittis prayer, in which the elderly St. Simeon, who had been promised that he would see the Messiah before dying, holds the baby Jesus and declares that he may now “depart this world in peace.”
This concert continues The Clarion Choir & Orchestra’s mutli-year project to perform Bach’s complete large-scale oratorios, a series that will continue with the ensemble’s performance in the spring of 2027 with the Easter Oratorio.
